The bronze statue of Hiawatha carrying Minnehaha (based on characters from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem The Song of Hiawatha) was created by Jacob H. Fjelde for the Columbian Exposition in 1893. In 1912 the statue was permanently placed in Minnehaha Park, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The plaque on the base of the statue states, "Erected in 1911 by means of funds raised through the efforts of Mrs. L.P. Hunt of Mankato, and contributions principally by the school children of Minnesota."
